Absolutely. You can to show the summary tasks and other combinations of tasks, milestones and times, by changing the filter in the Workspace Settings. By default it is set to Task and Milestones, which is the most common request for filtering. If you click the button, though, you get a host of options. The option you're looking for is either 'Show All Tasks' or 'Show Summary Tasks Only', which will only send summary tasks to SharePoint.

But will doing this display a task summary bar in SharePoint's gantt view or will it simply add another task (summary task) to the list.

In other words, how can I get the gantt view in Sharepoint to also show the summary tasks bar just like my local MS Project file does?

As of this moment it will add another task item to the SharePoint task list. However, we are currently upgrading the IntelliGantt Add In so that it can add actual summary tasks (which become folders in SharePoint containing subtasks) to your task list. Our forthcoming IntelliGantt Web Part for SharePoint can then give you a full hierarchy view of your project-- AND an optional full hiearchy view of all tasks from your subsites as well.

The IntelliGantt Web Part will be in BETA starting next week. The IntelliGantt Add In upgrade is happening right now.

Thanks for the question,

I have installed both the Add In and the Web part and neither is working with summary tasks. Unfortunately, I've got all kinds of problems with the web part but the forum for your web part section is not accepting posts. (whoops)

Anyway, I'm posting here, hoping that someone can help me out. Here's the utlimate goal:

1) I want to default the project view to My Tasks for all resources
2) I want myself (project manager) to view all task (as tasks).
3) I want the Silverlight web part to show all tasks as gantt, preferrably by longer time periods than months.

However, I'm pretty sure I screwed something up in the upload, because...
1) the gantt chart doesn't show anything close to summary tasks (though it does show in different colors)
2) the gantt part doesn't scroll up and down with the task list
3) the timescale doesn't get any smaller than months
4) the view of the web part is matched to the view of the list, my drop down only says "default" and gives me no other options.
5) the web part is slow to refresh and show changes.
6) oh, and the web part web page shows "error on page" in the bottom left.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Here are some quick answers for you:

1) Set the default view in the SharePoint task list to 'My Tasks'. Then everyone will see their tasks only by default.
2) When you go to the SharePoint task list, you will need to select 'All Tasks'
3) Longer time periods can be done by moving the thumb between the '-' and '+' icons at the bottom of the gantt chart. This is the 'zoom out' and 'zoom in' functionality. We are thinking about putting in a 'Magnification' value in the web part admin section. This would set the intial scale of the gantt chart for everyone.

Part b...

1) We are currently upgrading the IntelliGantt Add In so that it will send the hierarchy as well as the tasks to SharePoint. The Silverlight web part does show summary tasks (folders in SharePoint lists). They are just not being created by the Add In yet.
2) We will take a look at this. It seems to be in our labs, but there's always a special case.
3) Quarters should be supported as well, again with the +/- zoom in/zoom out feature.
4) The choice of views is sensitive to the currently selected list. By default, there is no list selected so all you have is 'Default'. Once you select a list, or any item within the list, the views are updated to show what is available from the list.
5) You should see item updates every minute and new items added/deleted every ten minutes by default.
6) That's a problem. Chalk this up to 'Beta'.

Thank you very much for your feedback. The other forum should be open as well now.
